The following excerpt is an exclusive conversation between Amit and CEO Insights that briefs his journey, leadership role, and his strategies that drive the business.
What inspired you to foray into the management realm of the health care sector?
I feel that my healthcare career happened to be because it was destined. I was very much interested in science, but things didn’t fall in place as I wanted. Although my grounding was in biological science at the high-school level, I pursued my bachelor’s degree in sociology and political science. But my passion for the medical industry never faded, I didn’t want the regret of not becoming a medical professional to stay with me forever. That is when I decided to proceed with my further studies in Hospital Management.
Fortunately, I got into one of the best institutions for Hospital management in India - the Indian Institute of Health & Hospital Management Research (IIHMR), Jaipur. Since then, there has been no turning back. Throughout my career, I have worked in leadership and executive roles in several renowned hospitals and healthcare companies.
What has been the driving force that helped your growth journey as a leader?
I believe that without ambition and passion, one starts nothing and without work, one finishes nothing.
I have realized that healthcare is a sector with a lot of gaps in supply and demand. Hailing from a remote village, I have seen people struggling for quality healthcare and hygienic facilities. I entered into the field to do my part of the contribution to society, people, and our nation. This goal has been the core driving force behind my professional journey so far.
What unique strategies have you been undertaking to promote Yatharth Group’s vision of becoming the preferred destination for quality healthcare?
Aligned to Yatharth’s vision, I personally believe that quality of care is the key component for the any kind of medical services. To deliver services that meet essential quality criteria, there are three crucial factors to consider - Firstly, the healthcare sector is ever-evolving, and it is important to stay aware and updated on all the latest innovations and technology. The second vital element is to attract the right clinical minds and get competent teams to work together on achieving our goals.
This requires vision, deft people management, and the ability to lead by example. The third and most essential aspect I strongly believe in is personalized care. A one-size-fits-all approach seldom works in healthcare, and leaders need to employ flexibility in addressing complex situations.
Each patient and attend an tenter the hospital with different expectations. We need to understand their individual concerns and tend to them in a customized fashion instead of treating them like just another patient.
Be passionate, love what you do, & give it your 100 percent, success will surely come to you
How did you tackle the surging pandemic situation at your hospital?
COVID 19 has shattered and stunned the healthcare systems across the globe. We faced our share of challenges and obstacles, but I believe that every problem comes with an opportunity. This disaster was a test for our potential, and Yatharth did a great job fighting it. We dedicated a big proportion of our facilities and beds for COVID. We had one out three hospitals, completely dedicated for COVID 19 for more than a year, whereas partially converted the other two hospitals to serve COVID 19 patients.
Throughout the pandemic management, we learned something every day and utilized our experience the other day to serve our patients better. I would like to thank everyone; right from cleaning staff to nurses, senior consultants, and top managements, for going beyond the call of duty in the hour of severe crisis in spite of a lot of them facing personal health issues and losses in their own families.
While the healthcare sector was tirelessly working, we did face several operational issues. However, tackling each and every issue meticulously and adhering to the measures put forth by the government was the need of the hour. We at Yatharth, had to ensure the safety of our staff, patients, and their families. We facilitated strict scheduling, careful social distancing, and other watertight protocols.
As the Group CEO of Yatharth Hospitals, how do you plan to take the company one step ahead?
Right now, we are in the phase of expansion, put together we have a bed strength of over 1405. We have our longterm vision on providing more specialties, services and increase foot prints, At the same time, we are very much focusing on delivery and optimizing the utilization of our existing setups.
