ABB India Ltd., a leading engineering firm, announced on Tuesday that it has automated the first India-Bangladesh cross-border oil pipeline, which transports diesel from India to Bangladesh.
According to the company, it has delivered integrated automation and control solutions to ensure the safe, secure, and reliable operation of the 130-kilometer Indo-Bangla Friendship Pipeline (IBFPL).
Numaligarh Refinery Ltd., a public sector oil company in Assam, will be able to remotely monitor and control vital pipeline parameters such as flow, pressure, and temperature, as well as detect leaks, thanks to the automation.
ABB solutions will also generate reports, history sheets, critical messages, and alarms to provide real-time data on the performance of the pipeline network.
The diesel will be transported from the Numaligarh Refinery's Siliguri marketing terminal to the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation's Parbatipur oil depot. Approximately 6 km of the pipeline, the first of its kind between the two countries, will be within India's territory, with the remainder within Bangladesh's.
Notably, ABB India has a track record in pipeline automation for cross-country projects such as the Indo-Nepal petroleum pipeline, which opened in 2019 as the first of its kind in South Asia.
