Alibaba Group announced plans to consolidate all its e-commerce platforms into a single entity called the Alibaba E-commerce Business Group, according to a stock exchange filing on Thursday.
For the first time, Alibaba's domestic Chinese e-commerce operations will integrate with its international e-commerce platforms under one unified structure.
The new business group will merge several key units, including:
- The Taobao and Tmall Group, which dominate domestic e-commerce.
- The Alibaba International Digital Commerce (AIDC) Group is responsible for platforms like AliExpress (a cross-border marketplace), Alibaba.com (a wholesale B2B site), and Xianyu (a second-hand marketplace).
Jiang Fan, the current head of AIDC and a former Tmall chief, has been appointed to lead the new business group. Jiang's career faced a setback in 2020 due to an online scandal, but he has since regained prominence within the organization. He will report directly to Alibaba Group CEO Eddie Wu.
This move underscores Alibaba's commitment to streamlining operations and enhancing synergy between its domestic and international e-commerce ventures.
