The Solidaridad Network Asia and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to collaborate on worker well-being, reskilling, and productivity enhancement; accelerate the process of developing a digital platform for sustainability reporting; and achieve environmental, social, and governmental (ESG) standards and international corporate due diligence for a sustainable and green apparel industry. This will help BGMEA achieve its Sustainable Strategic Vision: 2030.
By designing and implementing supervisory skill development trainings, the initiative will work on skilling and re-skilling factory workers and mid-level managers in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, green workplace, and women empowerment.
Through consultations, both organisations will promote improved energy efficiency business models and assist BGMEA member factories in developing the necessary capacity.
Solidaridad will assist BGMEA in developing a digital data platform to collect meaningful and reliable data on environmental, social, and governance issues from BGMEA member factories in order to ensure more transparent and real-time reporting.
According to Bangladesh media reports, the sustainability reports of BGMEA member factories will be prepared in an updated platform for greater reach and circulation. The collaboration will also work on improving factory chemical management capacities and incorporating global chemical standards (ZDHC) into apparel industry policies and management systems to strengthen reporting and monitoring mechanisms.
