Correios, Brazil's postal service, announced on July 26 that it has signed an agreement with Singaporean shopping app Shopee to increase Brazilian product exports to Southeast Asian markets.
Shopee, which is owned by the Southeast Asian tech giant Sea, signed an agreement with Correios and the Brazilian Agency for the Promotion of Exports and Investments (ApexBrasil).
The agreement aims to assist Brazilian small and medium-sized businesses in exporting to countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Thailand.
According to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the trade bloc is a key partner for the Brazilian economy, with a trade flow of $16.6 billion in the first half of 2022, up 21.3 percent from the same period in 2021.
The agreement will provide companies with training, as well as "support for strategic and adequate operation on the Shopee platform" and shipping and distribution logistics assistance from Correios, Brazil's postal service said in a statement, adding that exports are expected to begin this year.
According to Eduardo Terra, president of the Brazilian Society of Retail and Consumption, the agreement will provide companies "with good products and a huge potential" with the know-how and access to these markets needed to begin the export process.
The move comes after Shopee announced last year that it had opened five new distribution centres in Brazil. Since its launch in the country in 2019, the app has become one of the most downloaded e-commerce apps, attracting users to its low-cost marketplace.
