eBay has named Vidmay Naini as its general manager for global emerging markets, a position that will oversee the company's expansion in Southeast Asia, India, Eastern Europe, Israel, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Naini previously led eBay's Southeast Asia and India operations.
Naini has worked for eBay for 18 years, and one of his previous projects was eBay's strategic investment in Flipkart.
"The digital economy is exponentially growing in these markets, with small and medium-sized businesses propelling its growth," Naini said in a statement. Global e-commerce platforms like eBay have the potential to revolutionise export opportunities and expand the reach of these businesses."
eBay highlighted its 2022 Southeast Asia Small Online Business Trade Report in its announcement about Naini's appointment, which found that 99% of all small businesses on eBay currently export items to an average of 25 different international markets on an annual basis.
68% of "eBay-enabled small businesses" in six Southeast Asian countries—Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore—export to ten or more international markets.
Naini stated in July that he expects strong growth in Southeast Asia and that eBay's business in the region is just getting started. "We've seen significant growth in our business, particularly with SMBs selling to the rest of the world from this region." The truth is that we are only scratching the surface because we still see eBay as a very nascent business here, and we expect it to grow exponentially."
