Thailand has experienced a major increase in data centre investments, with two Japanese businesses investing a total of US$164 million there. This occurs as cloud computing and digital transformation both experience exponential growth.
Telehouse just opened its first data facility in Thailand after spending $74 million on the venture. Through its subsidiary, NTT Global Data Centres Corporation, NTT committed 3 billion baht towards the construction of its largest data centre in Thailand, which is scheduled to start operations in the second half of 2024.
For many years, major international cloud and data centre providers have been growing their presence in Thailand. Tencent Cloud, Huawei, and NTT were among the early investors. Last year, Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud all entered the race.
On Rama IX Road in Bangkok, Telehouse, which is 66% owned by KDDI, inaugurated its first data centre in Thailand in May. The plant, which has a building area of 9,000 square metres and a power capacity of 9.5 megavolt amperes, is the company's third in Southeast Asia.
Through NTT Global Data Centres Corporation, NTT announced a 3 billion baht investment in March for the construction of its newest and largest data centre in Thailand. When fully constructed, the BKK3 facility will have a maximum IT capacity of 12 megawatts spread across roughly 4,000 square metres of IT space.
