Lawrence Wong was sworn in as Singapore's new Prime Minister on Wednesday night, marking the country's first leadership transition in two decades. At 51 years old, Wong succeeds Lee Hsien Loong, who, at 72, will continue serving in the Cabinet as Senior Minister.
In his first Cabinet lineup announced on Monday, Wong emphasized continuity and stability by appointing seasoned politician Gan Kim Yong as Deputy Prime Minister.
Lee Hsien Loong has overseen Singapore through various milestones, from managing the COVID-19 pandemic to significant policy decisions like the establishment of integrated resorts (IRs) and casinos in Singapore. Even in divisive matters like this, Lee maintained a consultative approach, seeking input from his Cabinet and incorporating innovative ideas into policies.
Former Cabinet minister Khaw Boon Wan recalled Lee's hands-on approach, noting that some innovative policies, such as entrance fees for Singaporeans and exclusion regulations for those facing financial difficulties, stemmed directly from Lee's initiatives.
Under Lee's leadership, Singapore's urban landscape has transformed, with areas like Punggol evolving from rural backwaters to modern urban hubs. The MRT network has also expanded significantly during his tenure, from two lines to six and counting.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore was among the first countries to secure a stockpile of vaccines. Lee led by example, receiving his vaccine jab early on, signaling confidence in the vaccination campaign and encouraging others to follow suit.
