By 2027, Singapore's new S$500 million national fabrication facility, which was announced in Budget 2025, will be available to semiconductor businesses, including startups.
The facility complements companies' research and development (R&D) efforts with cleanroom infrastructure and industry-grade tools, Gan Kim Yong, Minister for Trade and Industry, said. Additionally, it will help the translation and scaling of R&D by providing translational research and fabrication expertise.
The National Semiconductor Translation and Innovation Centre (NSTIC), which was founded by the Agency for Science, Technology, and Research (A*Star) in April of last year, will house the facility.
During the Committee of Supply debate on his ministry's budget, Gan, who is also deputy prime minister, stated that the new facility expands NSTIC to encompass more semiconductor technology.
At the moment, NSTIC gives businesses and researchers working in silicon photonics and flat optics access to R&D infrastructure. Additionally, it may be used for small-volume manufacturing and prototyping, which helps businesses scale and get to market more quickly.
The NSTIC (R&D Fab), which will be located at JTC nanoSpace @ Tampines, will first concentrate on improved packaging, a crucial area of growth in the semiconductor sector.
“The NSTIC (R&D Fab) will scale up our capacity to enable similar SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) and the broader semiconductor industry here to build new capabilities, develop and commercialise globally competitive technologies, and create high value jobs in Singapore,” said DPM Gan.
