Singapore has received an invitation from Brazil to participate in the 2024 G20 summit and summit. Brazil took over the G20 presidency from India on December 1 and plans to hold a summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19 next year.
"Singapore welcomes Brazil's request," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) and the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said in a press release on Dec 2. "It shows that this is a good relationship and cooperation between the two countries in many events
We want to deepen our cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, innovation, education, climate change and sustainability.
"Singapore will continue to actively contribute to the G20 process, both in our national capacity and as Convenor of the Global Governance Group (3G)."
The Global Governance Group is an informal group of 30 smaller and medium-sized members of the United Nations, established to promote stronger linkages between the G20 and UN member nations. Although Singapore is not a member of the G20, it has been invited to relevant meetings and events for a decade. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong attended the G20 summit held in India in September 2023 and Bali in 2022.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said his country will focus on reducing hunger and poverty, mitigating climate change and renewing global governance as head of the G20 group of the world's largest economies.
"I hope we can address the issues that we need to stop running away from and try to resolve," Lula said at a meeting with cabinet ministers in November to lay out Brazil's priorities for the G20.
