SK Broadband revealed that it entered into a contract for the E2A (East Asia to North America) international submarine cable construction consortium on the 21st in Seoul.
In this consortium, SK Broadband is involved solely in South Korea, alongside Japan's SoftBank and Chunghwa Telecom from Taiwan. This underwater cable spans 12,500 kilometers and reinforces critical digital centers that connect Asia with the United States, joining Busan, Chiba Prefecture, Touwu District, and Moro Bay.
An SK Broadband official emphasized, “The E2A submarine cable is expected to play a critical role in stably handling the rapidly increasing demand for international Internet traffic,” and “It will not only strengthen our global business competitiveness, such as international dedicated lines, but also lay the foundation for us to leap forward as an Asian network hub.”
The E2A submarine cable provides a data transfer capability of 16 terabits per second, enabling 660,000 people to watch UHD videos at the same time or download 500 full HD films in only one second. This submarine cable is anticipated to finish in the latter half of 2028 and will be vital in managing the increasing need for global internet traffic.
SK Broadband aims to improve its global business competitiveness with this project by reinforcing international dedicated lines and data centers, while establishing the foundation to become an Asian network hub.
Ha Min-yong, head of the AI Data Center Division at SK Broadband, noted that "the E2A submarine cable will enhance service stability and scalability tailored to the AI era.”
