South Korea Engages in Trade Talks with US to Resolve Tariff Concerns

South Korea has asked for "calm" and "orderly" meeting with the U.S and this meeting will be discussed about trade issues that have been made by South Korea, as a deal with the U.S is reportedly sought by Asia's fourth largest economy to be worked out by July to avoid tariffs.U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott bessent and U.S Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with South Korean Finance Minister Choi sang -mok and Trade, Industry, and Energy Minister Ahh Dukgeun.

According to South Korean media outlet Yonhap, reporters were told by Choi that further talks will be focused on four categories: tariff- and non-tariff measures; economic security; investment prospects; and monetary policies.South Korea's Ministry of Finance, Choi expressed South Korea's worries on tariffs and offered to look for solutions and potential for cooperation that would benefit both nations.The deal will reportedly be pursued by July 8, the day by which U.S. President Donald Trump's 90-day tariff suspension is due to end.

In 2024, the U.S. Commerce Department's international Trade Administration ranked the nation as the fourth-largest exporter of steel to the United States.“While South Korea has good odds of negotiating a trade deal with the US, its electoral calendar may extend the timeline for a comprehensive agreement. A new government will be in place following the 3 June election and its stance will likely shape the outcome of negotiations.”
