Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) announced plans to establish India as a global production hub for electric vehicles (EVs), including small, affordable EVs, leveraging the country's strong manufacturing ecosystem. Speaking on Thursday, Toshihiro Suzuki, the company's representative director and president, emphasized India’s growing demand for electric cars, which contrasts with the sluggish EV adoption trends in many global markets.
At the Bharat Mobility Show in New Delhi, Suzuki revealed that the company will launch multiple products, including compact and affordable EVs, to expand its footprint in the segment. Two models, e-Vitara and e-Access, are scheduled for introduction in India and are positioned as global models, reflecting the company's strategy to tap into international markets from its Indian base.
Suzuki's subsidiary, Maruti Suzuki, is focused on reclaiming its dominant position in India's passenger vehicle market, targeting a 50% market share by 2030. To achieve this, Maruti Suzuki is diversifying its offerings in the growing SUV segment while also catering to the small car segment, anticipating a shift as two-wheeler owners transition to four-wheelers.
India, now the world’s third-largest automobile market, plays a critical role in Suzuki's global growth strategy. Suzuki acknowledged intensifying competition in the market but remains committed to strengthening its position by introducing innovative products tailored to India's evolving mobility needs.
