A statement from Toyota Motor, its new EV-focused unit BEV Factory will develop and produce battery electric vehicles (EVs) using next-generation batteries beginning in 2026.
The Japanese automaker also said that it is creating a process for the mass production of solid-state batteries for its electric vehicles (EVs), with an eye towards the technology's commercialization in 2027–2028.
Takero Kato, the unit's president, stated in a video of a June 8 presentation that Toyota aims for an electric vehicle's operating range to reach 1,000 km (621 miles).
The long-range Tesla Model 3 EV has a range of around 700 kilometres, in contrast.
With BEVs, we hope to "change the future," according to Kato. "We will introduce the market with a full lineup of the next-generation battery EVs starting in 2026."
By 2030, BEV Factory, which was founded in May, plans to create around 1.7 million vehicles, according to Kato.
By 2026, Toyota hopes to sell 1.5 million EVs yearly, and by 2030, it wants to sell 3.5 million, or nearly one-third of its total volume worldwide.
For the first time ever, the carmaker sold 8,584 electric vehicles (EVs), including those under the Lexus name, across the world in April, making up more than 1% of its total sales worldwide for that month.
