The United States and China will hold deputy-level talks on debt and other issues on the sidelines of a G20 finance meeting in India on Friday, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Thursday, ahead of a meeting of G20 finance ministers and central bank governors near Bengaluru, that communication between the United States and China was important for "the sake of the entire globe".
One of the sources, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorised to speak to the media, said the Friday meeting would cover a wide range of multilateral issues, including debt.
When asked about the planned meeting, a US Treasury spokesperson declined to comment. The Ministry of Finance and China's central bank did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
The US has repeatedly chastised China for "dragging its feet" on debt relief for dozens of low- and middle-income countries, including Sri Lanka.
On Friday, China, the world's largest bilateral creditor, urged G20 nations to conduct a fair, objective, and in-depth analysis of the causes of global debt issues and to "resolve the problem in a comprehensive and effective manner."
