The White House announced on Sep 11 that Vietnam Airlines had signed a US$7.8 billion deal with US aircraft manufacturer Boeing.
The White House said that following a meeting in Hanoi, US President Joe Biden and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh "welcomed a landmark deal" between Boeing and Vietnam's national carrier.
The agreement "will support more than 30,000 jobs in the United States," according to the statement.
Biden announced the purchase of 50 737 aircraft by Vietnam Airlines during a roundtable discussion with senior executives from top American and Vietnamese companies, including both aviation companies.
Vietnam Airlines currently operates a fleet of 100 planes, including 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. According to state media, the Boeing jets will replace aircraft that are more than a decade old. The communist country's aviation sector has boomed in recent years, owing to a rapidly expanding middle class with growing appetites for - and budgets for - air travel.
