Elon Musk announced on Nov 5 that his artificial intelligence startup xAI will be integrated into his social media platform X as well as available as a standalone app. The billionaire also stated that xAI released its first AI model, a bot named Grok, on November 4 and made it available to all X Premium+ subscribers.
The startup's goal is to develop AI tools that "assist humanity in its quest for understanding and knowledge," and Grok is designed to answer questions with a sense of humour.
Musk, who has criticised Big Tech's AI efforts as censored, launched xAI in July, calling it a "maximum truth-seeking AI" that seeks to understand the nature of the universe to compete with Google's Bard and Microsoft's Bing AI.
"Grok has real-time access to info via the X platform, which is a massive advantage over other models," Musk added.
X, Musk's social media company formerly known as Twitter, is separate from xAI, but the two collaborate closely. xAI also collaborates with his electric car manufacturer Tesla and other companies.
Musk recently told British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak that he believes AI is "the most disruptive force in history." Musk speculated at the first global AI Safety Summit in Bletchley Park, England, that the technology will be able to "do everything" and render employment as we know it obsolete.
Musk co-founded OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, in 2015, causing a worldwide frenzy for generative AI technology, but stepped down from the board in 2018.
