In the past, architectural theory was the starting point for both urban design and urban planning, which later developed their own theories. In terms of theory, urban planning and urban design are two completely distinct fields where there is little evidence of feedback between the two processes. However, both disciplines work in the same physical space in actuality. The environment and the SDGs or Zero Emission Pledges are currently among the topics that are debated the most in practically all multilateral panels and meetings.
The worldwide response to climate change must include urban planning and urban design. At all urban scales— metropolitan area, city, district/neighborhood, block, and building—actions that simultaneously cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and increase resilience to climate threats should be prioritised. This must be accomplished in a manner that is sensitive to and appropriate for regional circumstances.
Urban planning and urban design should include integrated methods for reducing the effects of climate change while also taking into account regional characteristics. This is due to the fact that choices regarding urban form have long-term (>50 years) repercussions and as a result significantly impact a city's ability to cut GHG emissions and to adapt to climatic hazards over time. To achieve the changes required to respond to climate change successfully, it is prioritised to invest in mitigation techniques that also provide benefits for adaptation.
In India, demand for urban planning has increased dramatically during the past ten years. It is one of the most sought-after professions due to the power it holds to simply change the quality of life of people through very thoughtful interventions. As of today, India only has around 6,000 Urban Planners due to the field still being very niche, especially in smaller cities. This edition is presenting a list of select few urban planner & designers that take a holistic and globalized approach, in order to create solutions to our problems through planning solutions at an internationally standardized level.
