A new multi-storey bus depot in Sengkang West will be Singapore's first depot designed to support the large-scale deployment of electric buses, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The five-storey depot is set to accommodate a fleet of 500 electric, diesel, and hybrid buses and will be equipped with 240 electric vehicle (EV) chargers. These chargers will provide up to 360kW of power, allowing single-deck buses to be fully charged in less than 1.5 hours. Additionally, the chargers feature smart charging functions for optimizing charging speed and efficiency, along with real-time monitoring, control, and diagnostic capabilities.
SBS Transit (SBST), which received the depot in August, is preparing it for operations starting in early 2025. The facility also includes an operations control center, maintenance facilities, a staff canteen, and a lounge for bus captains, ensuring comprehensive support for bus operations.
Notably, the Sengkang West bus depot is the first to feature on-site staff quarters. The eight-story building includes 39 apartment units capable of housing up to 350 transport workers, including bus captains. Each apartment is equipped with ensuite toilets, a kitchen, and a yard, and the premises provide recreational facilities such as a TV room and a multi-purpose hall.
In line with Singapore’s focus on environmental sustainability, the depot will incorporate green roofs, solar photovoltaic systems, and rainwater recycling systems. The facility will also support the deployment of 10 new electric buses starting in December 2024, bringing the total number of electric buses in service to 70. This new depot underscores LTA's commitment to advancing sustainable transport and green infrastructure in Singapore.
