Adding on to this is the sedentary lifestyles of youth today that has resulted in a significant increase in the number of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension – both of which are now known to increase the risks of developing chronic kidney diseases (CKD) among people and been the underlying cause of 60 percent of the CKD cases in India lately.
Further, the India nephrologist market which was worth $93.6 million in 2020 is expected to reach $102.7 million by 2027, with a CAGR of 1.4 percent during the forecast period. As a result, there is an increasing demand for skilled nephrologists today to effectively cater to this market growth.

Post completing her doctoral degree, she started working as an Assistant Professor of Nephrology at the Saveetha Medical College. This not only exposed Dr. Neha to a host of new market dynamics, but also helped her stay updated with the latest trends and tech advancements in the market. “While a major function of the kidneys is to excrete numerous toxins from the DNA, they fail to do so at the end stage renal failure.
Passionate to acquire more knowledge about such CKD, I took-up Uremic Toxins in CKD Patients as the topic for my DM thesis focusing on two specific toxins – p-Cresyl sulfate and Indoxyl Sulfate. If not artificially excreted through dialysis or with the help of medicines, these toxins accumulate within the patient's body and cause severe uremia. This research work broadened my subject matter expertise immensely and has played a key role in shaping me into the successful nephrologist that I am today”, proudly explains Dr. Neha.

Adding on, she urges people to undergo regular checkups for diabetes and BP, and also inculcate healthy lifestyle and dietary habits to have a healthy well-being and keep health problems at bay. Given the increasing number of new interventions that are taking birth in nephrology of late, the areas of specialization have now become more specific than ever before. Thus, Dr. Neha advises young medical professionals to put in their maximum efforts into becoming an interventional nephrologist and create a niche for themselves in this highly competitive space.
“Similar to any other industry or profession, women medical professionals do face a lot of challenges especially in terms of being underpaid as compared to their male counterparts. Also, women are most often under immense pressure to balance numerous aspects on both their personal and professional fronts, as opposed to the men. Despite these factors, I have been fortunate enough to not be exposed to any kind of gender bias or discrimination so far in my career”, smiles Dr. Neha, explaining about her professional journey as a women medical professional.
