Nephrology has seen remarkable advancements over the past few decades, significantly improving the quality of care for patients with kidney disease. Central to this progress are dedicated professionals like Dr R. P. Mathur, MD, DM (Nephrology, AIIMS), who have not only witnessed but also driven these changes. With over four decades of experience, Dr Mathur's career offers a unique perspective on the evolution of nephrology and the unwavering commitment required to excel in this demanding field.
When Dr Mathur began his career in nephrology in 1985, the landscape of kidney care in India was vastly different from what it is today. Assigned to Nair Hospital in Mumbai, he witnessed firsthand the scarcity of nephrology services as limited facilities forced patients to travel great distances for essential treatments. Whereas, today, even district-level hospitals in tier-2 cities are equipped with nephrology services, dialysis units, and advanced diagnostic tools. Standing as a testament to this transition, Dr Mathur’s journey also reflects a dedication to lifelong learning, patient-centric care, and pioneering treatments.
Lessons from AIIMS
Dr Mathur's tenure at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was a pivotal period that deeply influenced his professional ethos. Working alongside the best minds in the country, he absorbed invaluable lessons under the mentorship of distinguished professors like Dr S.C. Dash.
“AIIMS taught me the importance of compassion and the human touch in patient care”, recalls Dr Mathur. He further adds, “Our professor would personally ensure that patients received the required care, even writing a letter to the ICU chief for patients’ transfer from ward to ICU if required.” This holistic approach—combining empathy with interdisciplinary coordination—has been a cornerstone of Dr Mathur's practice.
Academic Excellence & Continuous Learning
A life member of many national and international nephrology and medicine societies, Dr Mathur's academic journey is marked by notable achievements, including a national scholarship, two gold medals in final MBBS exam, a Fellowship from the International Society of Nephrology to work at Manchester Royal Infirmary and receive the ‘ISN Scholar’ award. He has also been awarded FRCP (London), Fellowship of the Indian Society of Nephrology (FISN) and Fellowship of the Indian College of Physicians (FICP).
These accolades have fueled his passion for learning and teaching. “To remain at the top and excel, one must continuously engage in the learning process”, emphasizes Dr Mathur. This philosophy drives him to share knowledge with colleagues and students, fostering a culture of perpetual learning. To stay updated with the advancements in nephrology as well as general medicine, he actively engages with contemporary research through journals, conferences, and professional networks. He is a teacher, research guide, and examiner for DNB Nephrology appointed by the National Board of Examinations. His involvement in teaching postgraduate students ensures that he is continuously refining his knowledge and skills. “I regularly share valuable articles and findings with my peers”, notes Dr Mathur, highlighting his commitment to collective growth within the nephrology community.
Looking ahead, Dr Mathur envisions significant breakthroughs in nephrology that promise to revolutionize patient care. He is particularly optimistic about new drugs that slow the progression of kidney disease and innovative technologies such as implantable and wearable artificial kidneys. Additionally, he foresees the potential of xenotransplantation using animal organs for human transplants as a viable solution to the chronic shortage of donor kidneys.
Navigating Complex Cases with Expertise & Innovation
Throughout his career, Dr Mathur has encountered numerous challenging cases that have tested his ability to think outside the box and make decisions that prioritize patients’ overall wellbeing’. One such case involved a young man in dire need of a kidney transplant. The available deceased donor kidneys, affected by diabetes and deemed marginal, were rejected by other hospitals. However, Dr Mathur saw an opportunity to save a life. By implanting both kidneys into the patient, he not only freed him from the burden of dialysis but also restored his independence and confidence.

Preventive Measures - A Call to Action
“Kidney disease is a growing pandemic, affecting one in ten individuals”, warns Dr Mathur while emphasizing the critical importance of preventive care. To combat this, he advocates for regular health check-ups, especially for those with a family history of diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease. He believes that through lifestyle modifications and good control of blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight, along with early treatment using kidney-friendly medications, the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) can be slowed, potentially delaying or avoiding dialysis.
Dr Mathur is actively involved in spreading awareness and educating the public on these vital preventive measures through public lectures, print, and digital media, including his Youtube channel. Furthermore, the research projects under his supervision include prevention and management of kidney disorders in patients with liver diseases. He is also a member of various national and international core committees to develop guidelines and has published papers in this field.
“I strongly advise everyone to adopt a healthy lifestyle rich in nutritious foods, low in salt and sugar, and high in fruits, vegetables and fibers to support gut health. Avoid ultra-processed foods that contribute to obesity—a major risk factor for kidney disease. More importantly, maintain adequate hydration, exercise regularly, ensure quality sleep for 7-8 hours, manage stress, connect with people, and have a purpose in life”, concludes Dr Mathur.
