The Kazakhstan Freight and Logistics Market size is estimated at $11.36 billion in 2024 and is expected to reach $14.80 billion by 2029, according to a report by Mordor Intelligence. The countries involved in the Middle and Southern Corridors have already been independently developing infrastructure and fostering cooperation. The growth of transportation through the Central Asian countries and, consequently, their role as a logistics hub, is all but assured. However, various political and geopolitical situations as well as climate changes urge the search for alternative transportation routes and optimal solutions.
To overcome this obstacle and emerge as one of the largest private railway operators in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Eastcomtrans constantly monitors market trends, striving to keep up with and anticipate market changes. Following this philosophy, the company has focused on diversifying its business, and four years ago, it became an active player in the container transportation industry, both in the universal and specialized sectors.
The main guiding principle for Eastcomtrans is the responsibility it takes towards customers and partners. For customers, it is important to receive the cars on time and dispatch the cargo to its destination, whereas a consignee must receive its cargo without delay. "We make every effort to ensure that despite any unforeseen circumstances, the customer’s cargo is delivered on time and in full. As a result, we manage to maintain good and stable relationships with our partners over many years, also due to our high efficiency rate and flexible approach", mentioned Almas Abaideldinov, Director of Eastcomtrans.
Operational Excellence
The company owns a fleet of 11,000 railcars, which is very diverse. It transports oil, petroleum products, gas, bulk cargo, ore, iron ore concentrates, metals, high-value-added goods, agricultural goods, and more. It also engages specialized rolling stock to satisfy the needs of customers. Eastcomtrans is one of the few companies offering high-
quality transportation services along the entire 1520 gauge. Since it regularly keeps its fleet up-to-date, Eastcomtrans' railcars are allowed to operate along the entire 1520 gauge, including the Baltic states. The company has ensured the presence of its representatives and branch offices in nearly all countries and cities where it operates and has built a reliable regional partnership network. "We also render full service and repairs of railcars, as we have our own car repair depots located in the Northern, Western, and Southeastern parts of Kazakhstan.
We provide a full range of services, including unscheduled repairs and capital repairs, which extend the service life of railcars", stated Almas Abaideldinov.
Advanced Technology Use
Eastcomtrans keeps up with modern developments in digital technologies and innovations. At work, it uses modern digital solutions for management, accounting, planning, and optimization of transportation solutions and shipments. To ensure the high efficiency of shipments, route planning must be done not only by the shortest but also by the fastest and cheapest route, which is not always possible. To maximize efficiency, it uses digital solutions, both its own and those developed and available in the open market.
Currently, it is developing a portal that it sees will serve not only as an information stand where customers receive information but also as a platform by means of which customers will be able to fill out applications, receive feedback, keep track of their goods and cars, and avail themselves of necessary regulatory and legal documentation. "Customers will be able to see where their goods and railcars are, what operations they are undergoing, what their travel time is, what their load/unload timeframes are, and electronically issue and receive relevant documents and make mutual settlements", said Almas Abaideldinov.
Promoting Environmental & Social Sustainability
From an environmental point of view, the company’s cars do not produce emissions as opposed to diesel locomotives; however, the government is now actively building infrastructure facilities, most of which will be electrified. Electric locomotives produce fewer emissions compared to diesel locomotives. In this respect, Eastcomtrans believes it does not cause any harm to the environment; to the contrary, it contributes to the improvement of the environmental situation by replacing automobiles and trucks on roads.
The customer’s cargo is a priority, & Eastcomtrans makes every effort to ensure that despite any unforeseen circumstances, it is delivered on time & to the customer’s satisfaction
The company’s operational efficiency also translates into the cost of goods it transports. For example, its terminal, when fully completed and put into operation, will help cargo owners reduce their transportation costs from 5 percent to as much as 35 percent, depending on the type of cargo and direction. This reduction will be achieved through efficient use of rolling stock, repacking, and optimal loading. Accordingly, reduced transportation costs will bring cost efficiency in respect to those cargoes which it has transported.
Bulk goods such as crushed stone, wheat, grain, and more, are transported by rail, and these are all socially important goods. Ultimate prices of food, heat, and electricity consumed on a daily basis depend on the company’s efficiency, costs, and speed in transporting those goods. Thus, Eastcomtrans’ social responsibility is to arrange for transportation of socially important goods as effectively and inexpensively as possible.
Looking Ahead
One of the greatest opportunities in the region that the company is looking at is the development of the Caspian region and a Caspian Railway and Sea Hub. In terms of risks, on the one hand, the Caspian Sea is becoming shallower, and on the other hand, the existing infrastructure is not sufficient, which eventually makes transhipment across the Caspian Sea very expensive. “We also see additional opportunities in the logistics sector in the Central Asian countries. Problems and shortcomings are potential opportunities and can be seen as a launching ground for further development", concluded Almas Abaideldinov.
