The Myanmar telecommunications industry has been recording a major development, largely fueled by the growth in its mobile broadband services. Claiming to own around 95 percent of the market penetration rate, due to the increasing mobile subscribers of the prominent mobile network operators (MNOs), the telecommunication sector has also reaped significant investments in the interdependent power and telecommunication infrastructure domains. In addition, the introduction of 5G and the rising data consumption have exerted pressure on the MNOs to extend their network capacity to include rural coverage, which, in turn, carves out potential avenues for infrastructure services companies to thrive in the region.
Among the rising numbers, there are many of them who claim to specialize in rendering point solutions, but Iengineeing, on the other hand, stands a cut above the rest through its diversified portfolio of end-toend infrastructure solutions to the telecommunication and power industries in Myanmar.
Formed in Myanmar in 2013, IENG Myanmar is a part of IENG Group, a 16-year-old pioneer that leverages comprehensive and cost-effective infrastructure solutions through its partners and local subsidiaries in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. “IENG Group was the dream of two individuals, our co-founders and CEOs. Starting in 2007 with one client and five-six employees in Ghana, we currently stand strong in 22 countries with roughly 4000 employees”, shares Salah Medawar, Chief Commercial Officer, IENG Group. Continuing its parent company’s legacy, Iengineering Myanmar provides all-inclusive solutions, covering managed services, network deployment, fiber optics, MV, HV, & EHV transmission networks, and even after-sales services.
“We are one of the leading service providers in the country. Over the years, we have built over 800 sites from scratch and executed over 6,000 power projects, upgrades, and refurbishments. Presently, we are managing more than 2,200 sites,” explains Salah. Like the main group, IENG Myanmar is also certified with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and OHSAS 18001 and has emerged as a preferred telecom infrastructure services partner
among its marquee clients like Airtel, IGT, MTN, Ooredoo, Pan Asia, ATOM, Apollo, Orange, and Huawei, to name a few.
With integrity and innovation at the helm of its operations, IENG Group understands that every terrain varies and hence, strives to serve each operation and subsidiary differently, catering to each of the multidomestic, technical, and operational needs of the client subsidiaries, without compromising its strong relationship with their respective groups. The company is majorly distinguished by its two business lines, consisting of services and products, which aid the complete process right from engineering and construction (E&C), tower designs, hybrid power solutions, and operation and maintenance (O&M).
“One of our sister companies, named EKI.STRUCT, designs the towers, which are further manufactured in different countries. In parallel, another sister company, GREENPOLE, designs and assembles the required power solutions, and delivers them to various countries. Additionally, we get the best procurement and offers from our supply areas”, adds Salah. The E&C team then builds the sites and installs the power equipment and towers, while the O&M team ensures regular maintenance of the sites, required deliveries through logistics and after-sales services.

Continuing the Legacy
IENG Myanmar serves as a reflection of the main IENG Group’s excellency. IENG Group believes that its success is primarily related to its employees and their efforts and capabilities, which have pushed the Group to its current stature. The company is powered by top-notch employees and a highly-qualified management team, spearheading the key positions in every department. They further work collectively with the Country Heads, who locally recruit specialized people trained to work in different departments to continue giving best service to the client. “Of course, there are challenges like anywhere else. But our approach allows us to have steady ground amidst the challenges to help us grow”, shares Salah. Apart from the technical service, the company is also proactive in contributing to society through several philanthropic initiatives.
According to Salah, the industry of telecom and power in Myanmar is still fraught with poor network coverage and frequent power outages, which stunt the growth of mobile operators who rely on power grids. This can be alleviated if the MNOs increase their power sources by upgrading or investing more capex in their power infrastructure. To enable MNOs to do the same, IENG Group is currently developing a ground-breaking solution with the help of EKI.STRUCT and GREENPOLE. It will be a combination of tower-power equipment, which will be marketed to the MNOs, helping them choose any vendor of their choice to install their 5G equipment and expand their 5G networks.
