Myanmar's construction sector is predicted to decrease by 3.7 percent in 2023. Foreign direct investment, as well as the ‘International Grant or Loan Programme’, is one of the most important drivers supporting the country's infrastructure development expansion. Foreign investment inflows contributed significantly to infrastructure development programmes between 2012 and 2020. However, the ongoing political unrest, increased security concerns in remote regions, and a shortage of engineering personnel are causing the industry to languish. This has also resulted in low investor and consumer confidence, a devaluation of the domestic currency, tighter Western sanctions, supply chain bottlenecks and the consequent withdrawal of large foreign companies from the country.
Established in 1999, Suntac Technologies, based in Yangon, Myanmar, has been offering technology based end-to-end services for infrastructure projects management. The key objective of the company is to offer a wide range of solutions to support Myanmar's accelerating technological advancement and infrastructure expansion. Overcoming the numerous challenges and turmoil which the industry is facing by restructuring workforces to optimize efficiency and quality, the firm is pioneering the growth of the nation’s infrastructural development.
Recognized for its Uniqueness
Suntac Technologies is a subsidiary of Suntac Group which was established in 1997. The company is completely owned by citizens of Myanmar and consists of highly qualified and experienced surveyors, engineers, technicians, and geologists. Experts with experience in the sectors of civil and mechanical engineering, aerial mapping, surveying, remote sensing, computer technology, geo-engineering and geographic information system technology form the workforce and core team at Suntac, giving the company a competitive edge in the industry.
“Our main intent is to be ‘the complete solution provider of Infrastructure development pre-engineering services’ throughout the region. We aspire to introduce advanced technology and quality engineering services to establish a complete Geomatics and IT solutions provider in Myanmar and at the international level.
We also aim to provide international engineering standards that will enhance both state and private sector development; to establish a leading technology center for the remote sensing, GIS, geodetic engineering and survey engineering fields; and to provide technical consultancy services at local and international levels”, shares Sit Taing Aung, Founder.
With extensive experience garnered over the decades also while collaborating with international investors, consultants, and engineering firms, Suntac Technologies has worked on a diverse array of developmental projects including hydro power, motor roads, railroads, solar power farms, river survey, deforestation projects, mining industry, special economic zones (Special Industry Zone), agricultural development; studies relating to dams and irrigation systems, and national spatial database development, and more. The firm had also worked on projects in the Middle East, Europe, South America, and Australia.

Suntac is also one of the very rare companies in the region that offer a complete package of services including GIS, RS, aerial photo, topographic survey, and geo engineering services. The firm also sells, and distributes equipment like survey instruments, satellite imaging instruments, and more. Among the plethora of offerings, the firm’s aerial photography, digital mapping, topographic survey, and geo-engineering services are the flagship solutions for which Suntac holds a distinctive specialization.
Expertise & Vision
During the initial years, Suntac Technologies operated alongside its international partners and consultants. However, eventually, as the firm became 100 percent Myanmar owned and operated, it was also split into multiple business units, each specializing in a specific sector and operated by its own sub-management and having its own accounts to enhance transparency and responsibility of financial status, without impacting the entire company. Today, the firm has been accredited by organizations like JICA, GIZ, IFC, and World Bank which allows the firm to build reliability and stability. Furthermore, the firm has fostered strong partnerships with firms like FINMAP, PASCO, SWECO, Penta Ocean, and other leading firms across the globe. These achievements have elevated Suntac Technologies to attain international recognition as a prominent infrastructure development pre-engineering services provider.
“When we first started our journey, we tried selling the equipment and products but after we realized that trading was not a complete solution because our customers want the solution provider, we tried to transform our company from trading to the complete solution provider. For example, we can sell the satellite image but we do interpretation, we can take the aerial photos but we also provide the complete digital map according to our customer's requirements. For geo-engineering, we also provide the complex solutions like drilling, geo-physics, and complete solutions for the clients regarding geo-engineering”, further adds Sit Taing Aung.
Having established its position as an industry leader, the company is also preparing to fulfill its ambitious plans for the coming years. Suntac has planned to expand and extend its scope of services which has been in the works for some time but the progress of which has been impacted by the ongoing turmoil in the country. The firm is still working on ways in which the portfolio of offerings can be enhanced, while also striving to maintain its position as a reliable and iconic local infrastructure pre-engineering firm delivering international level solutions.
