Irrespective of the era, achieving accuracy in weather forecasts has never been easy. However, the recent quantifiable developments in computing power and the advent of technologies like AI have drastically improved accuracy, equipping meteorologists to manage potential disasters efficiently. This substantial leap has urged meteorological ventures to thrive and adapt quickly to navigate through the ever-evolving realm, foregrounding the demand for forward-thinking and innovative business leaders with revolutionary solutions.
One such exemplary leader is Chuen Chung Chui, a visionary with creative flair. With his expertise, the power of AI, and a genuine passion for the industry, Chuen Chung Chui and his brainchild, Knoweather, have emerged as transformative forces in catalyzing the resilience of people and the development of science.
Achieving Excellence
With the objective of utilizing AI to enable the undisturbed growth of weather-sensitive businesses, Chuen Chung Chui founded Knoweather, a meteorological technology company, in 2019. However, his unwavering affinity for weather can be traced back to his tenure at the University of Reading, England, where he unveiled the vast potential of the field through education and extensive research. “As an enthusiast with deep interest in extreme weather, I started my career by tracking hurricanes using online resources, delving into the less-chartered 'how' aspects of different weather phenomena,” recollects Chuen Chung Chui.
Understanding the long-standing bureaucracy of securing funds and approval in this industry evident in the conventional regulatory frameworks, he proceeded to establish his own venture to develop weather technologies with his own financial resources, avoiding intermediary monitoring, external approval, and subsequent delays. Today, headquartered in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area, Knoweather has become a trusted partner for marquee clients owing to its skilled team of meteorologists, AI engineers, and designers with a groundbreaking product portfolio.
Distinguished for delivering transparent and accurate weather insights, even in unfavorable conditions, Knoweather offers an
enterprise-grade AI-integrated product portfolio, comprising All-day High-Definition Visible True-Color Satellite Imagery (ADVIS) and AeroWaves. Designed to alleviate the major drawback of infrared imagery, ADVIS provides high-resolution true-color imagery during the day as well as at night with remarkable clarity. Utilizing NightVIS, its proprietary deep-learning-based night-time visible reflectance generation technology, the imagery helps users identify and analyze low clouds, radiation fog, and low-level winds, which can ultimately lead to better assessment of high-impact weather events like tropical cyclones, thunderstorms and cold fronts.
AeroWaves, an aviation weather satellite imagery, was launched by the company recently to help aviators locate potential clear-air-turbulence in real time. “Most existing turbulence products are derived from forecast models that are too coarse to resolve turbulence. Through AeroWaves, we use real-time satellite observation of water vapor concentration to identify turbulence-prone regions such as gravity waves, which come with the risk of breaking and causing turbulence. We then present the results intuitively to help pilots, who are not weather scientists, make decisions swiftly with confidence,” explains Chuen Chung Chui.
Enabling Collective Growth
The expanding product suite of Knoweather is a testament to the vision and leadership of Chuen Chung Chui. He plays a multifaceted role in the collective growth of his adept team and business, including a manager, a scientist, a graphic designer and a full-stack software developer, while overseeing every project and strategizing business development. Beyond his accomplishments in the industry, he is a commendable philanthropist and serves as the Vice Director General of the Macau Meteorological Society, as a part of which he educates the public about weather science through social media and online educational promotion. Although he prefers to keep these two roles separate, he attributes his managerial skills to this NGO.
There are a lot of people who can make things work, but the ones who truly stand out are those who make things work uniquely by stepping out of their comfort zone
As a CEO, Chuen Chung Chui strives to be at the forefront of changes by reading the news daily and constantly looking for distinctive innovations and paths to lead the team in realizing his creative thoughts. “There are a lot of people who can make things work, but the ones who truly stand out are those who make things work uniquely by stepping out of their comfort zone,” opines Chuen Chung Chui. He firmly believes in his chosen path, and he views a leader as a person who embraces differentiation. “I used to act upon validation and appreciation. But over the years, I have understood that people inherently resist unconventional views, opinions, and visions that go against the norm, just like nature.
We must persevere and should not get disheartened, scared, or tired, when we lack the necessary support for becoming pioneers,” he adds. With such affirmative contributions to his acclaim, Chuen Chung Chui is currently expanding the product range to create more imageries within the next two years. “Sensing a significant opportunity for enhancing the data presentation, we want to cater to not just scientists, but also users who are not meteorology veterans. When spearheading a technology company like Knoweather, my team and I continuously seek to develop technologies to facilitate efficiency and build a better and happier community,” concludes Chuen Chung Chui.
