In response to developments in the healthcare field, medical schools across Asia are incorporating new technologies and pedagogical approaches, emphasizing collaboration and interprofessional education, and preparing students to work in a global context. Established in 2013, Tan Tao University School of Medicine (SOM) was the first non-profit university in Vietnam to adopt the model of American liberal education.
The school strives to provide a modern and progressive training environment that promotes international integration and it has emerged as a leader in multidisciplinary, medical education within Vietnam. One of the distinguishing features of the Faculty of Medicine at the SOM is its provision of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) courses for Asian medical students. This offering serves as a lowercost alternative to overseas Vietnamese and international students seeking to pursue a career as a physician.
To ensure that students are equipped with practical skills, the school provides access to modern laboratory equipment and teaching methods for clinical study, and opportunities to participate in research and scientific reports at conferences and workshops in Vietnam, China, Korea, and the United States. Additionally, each year the university hosts world-renowned, American professors to teach its students.
Through its commitment towards innovative approaches in medical education and preparation for USMLE, the Faculty of Medicine at Tan Tao University is contributing to the enhancement of medical education in Asia. The school is committed to preparing students to practice medicine in Vietnam and the United States, and to equipping them with the necessary tools to succeed in a rapidly changing global landscape.
Hands-On Training with Industry-Academia Partnership
The SOM at Tan Tao University (TTU) has gained a reputation for its multidisciplinary medical training program, which sets it apart from other universities in Vietnam. SOM offers several advantages, including compliance with the regulations set forth by the Ministry of Education and Training, and the expansion of students’ medical knowledge by teaching part of the curriculum from the School of Medicine at the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA. TTU is the only university in Vietnam offering a bilingual English-Vietnamese program that provides students with the ability to speak foreign languages and access international medical records. Eventually, full training of medical graduates will be conducted in English as international cooperation expands.
TTU also provides clinical clerkship opportunities in major hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, the US, and Korea, allowing students to practice medicine in both Vietnam and the United States. This is the only university in Vietnam currently preparing students for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and 2, facilitating the transfer of students to doctoral programs in Vietnam and the United States upon graduation. Moreover, SOM students participate in research and present scientific reports at conferences and workshops held in Vietnam, China, Korea, and the United States. Lastly, graduates of SOM possess the skills and behaviors of US physicians, and learners are confident in their ability to provide healthcare to the people of Vietnam and other regional countries. TTU’s talented students will also have opportunities to pursue further studies and work in foreign countries worldwide, including the US, upon completion of the program.
